Is CypherKeep open source?

The cryptographic core uses Apple's CryptoKit, which is publicly documented. The application itself is closed-source, but we publish detailed cryptographic specifications so security researchers can audit the encryption design.

CypherKeep is offline-only and native to macOS. There is no cloud sync, no account, and no telemetry. Your vault file lives on your Mac. 1Password and Bitwarden are excellent for teams that need cross-device sync — CypherKeep is for people who want zero network surface.

What encryption does CypherKeep use?

AES-256-GCM via Apple CryptoKit, with keys derived using Argon2id from your master password. The vault key is unwrapped only in memory after a successful unlock.

What happens if I forget my master password?

Accepted Answer

There is no recovery. Your master password is the only key — we never see it, store it, or have a way to reset it. We recommend writing it down and storing it in a secure physical location.
